Water can be deadly for electronic items…I think many of us who have used or still using an iPhone faced this problem atleast once when we accidentally dropped our iPhone in the pool or water & then be like, Holy shit! It’s gone!
Now-a-days most high-end phones are coming with IP water & dust resistant ratings so the occurrences of getting a phone totally damaged due to liquid damage have become considerably lower now…
In case of iPhones are concerned, they are given an IP ratings of IP67 and IPX7 & this includes the whole lot of iPhones starting from iPhone 7…iPhone 6 or the below versions don’t have any IP ratings though so if you are one of those people who are still using an iPhone 5 or iPhone 6 variants, your devices don’t have any IP rating sadly…
Water-Resistant vs Water-Proof
We also must understand that, a phone being “Water Resistant” does NOT mean that it’s also “Water-Proof”…These two are different technical jargons used by the manufacturers which might sound identical but in reality they are not the same…
IP67 and IPX7 mean, that your devices are fully protected against dust that can harm the internals, and your phone can survive after being submerged for 30 minutes in up-to 3 ft of water…
Manufacturers can claim that their smartphones are water-resistant to a certain extent but no smartphone manufacturer will ever be able to claim that, their smartphones are 100% waterproof because that ain’t possible because water will eventually find a way to get into it & we will instantly assume that, we lost our precious iPhone in the watery grave…
You Can Check for Water Damage
Do you know or aware about your iPhone water damage indicator ? Yes you can check iPhone for water damage…
There is an water damage iPhone indicator built right in the SIM slot…It’s a piece of plastic which changes it’s color from white to red if it detects that your device got too much water into it…
Try to peek into the SIM slot if you can see the color of the indicator…If you can’t see any red there, you might be eligible to claim the warranty but then again, there can be a water damage to other components of the phone which may very well remain undetected…
Even if you find the indicator as red, still try to turn your iPhone on after like couple of days to check if it’s showing any sign of life in it…

How To Remove Water From iPhone
1) Dry Your iPhone Manually :
Before you try the other methods, first take out your iPhone from the liquid & try to dry it as much as you can.
Follow these below steps for reference…
- As soon as you realize, that you have knowingly (or unknowingly) submerged your iPhone in water, immediately take it out from there…Duh ?
- Turn the device Off & REFRAIN FROM USING IT…It's very important…
- If you are using a phone case/back cover etc, remove that from your phone…
- Pull the SIM card out…
- Shake the device or try to suck out as much water as you can…
- Wipe your phone clean with a clean & soft cloth…
- Now let your phone dry & wait patiently…The longer you can wait, the better…If you can wait for 2-3 days, do that…
If the above method works, then great otherwise follow the next method…
2) Silica Gel Method :
- Get some silica gel, whole lot of it…They are cheap & easily available…
- Take a container or box which should be air-tight when it’s closed…
- Now fill the bottom of the container with the silica gel packets…
- Place your iPhone above the bottom layer of the silica gel you just made…
- Now put all the remaining silica gel above your iPhone so that your iPhone gets totally covered by silica gel from bottom to top…
- Now close the container tightly, keep your fingers crossed & open the box after 2 days to see if your phone comes back to life…The silica gel might absorb the water out of your iPhone if you are lucky enough…
Note : You can try the above Silica method with Rice also…If you want to use rice, follow the same procedure above & instead of filling the container with silica, do it with rice…
The Rice method may not be that much effective so try the first two methods first…
If any of these methods don’t work, then it’s time to take your phone out to an Apple service center (you can just type in Google “iPhone water damage repair near me” to find your nearest Apple repair centers) but be reminded, if you have not purchased an AppleCare+ plan then your iPhone water damage repair cost can literally run into hundreds of dollars depending on your specific model, because Apple does not cover water or any liquid damage under its standard warranty…
So if your iPhone becomes damaged due to a liquid damage, you can’t claim any warranty unless you got an AppleCare+ protection plan…
